In 2015 and 2016, photographer Sonja Hamad accompanied a group of women from the YPJ, the all-female brigade of the Syrian-Kurdistani armed forces, as they took on Isis forces in northern Syria and northern Iraq.
In the resulting series, Hamad weaves images of bullet-pocked walls and battered landscapes between striking portraits of the women. Unlike the often sensationalist depictions of the YPJ as glamorous, gun-shouldering warriors, Hamad captures her subjects unarmed, their faces set with intent.
